Joe Cohen currently serves as a Partner and practice leader of the Finance and Business Intelligence Services for 9Gauge Partners in Austin, Texas. In this role, he works with a variety of clients to drive performance and effectiveness in financial planning, analysis and reporting, as well as process engineering. Joe is an ace troubleshooter and repairman of existing models, but his real gift is in using multi-divisional input and existing systems to create new, integrated and repeatable processes that manage assets, measure profitability, and accurately analyze and robustly report company performance and metrics resulting in customized reporting packages for investors, board members and executives.
Among the many 9Gauge services Joe has delivered, some items of note include the following:
- Cross-departmental data convergence project to deliver deep dimensionalization of revenue reporting utilizing SQL Server and Oracle/Hyperion Essbase, including data architecture, process design and implementation, and reporting design and development
- Data architecture of sales, product, customer, and billing data to support invoice automation, management reporting, and executive dashboarding
- Design and build of revenue transaction processing database for daily transaction accounting with focus on bookings reporting, revenue recognition, accounts receivable monitoring, and customer/product analysis, utilizing MySQL
- Data-driven lead valuation analysis supporting lead purchasing decisions that delivered 4000% ROI for the client
Prior to 9Gauge Partners, Joe served as Finance Process Leader and Business Performance Manager for Hoover’s/Dun & Bradstreet. In this role, he developed processes and workflows to enable controlled and efficient data collection and reporting. He collaborated with marketing, product, and sales leaders to plan and assess effectiveness of initiatives, promotions, and pricing strategies. In addition, Joe designed and implemented a portfolio of sales and revenue forecasting models, yielding triangulated sales forecasts, detailed revenue forecasts, and operating income projections. He managed planning and forecasting consolidation for post-M&A activity and led a cross-departmental project resulting in a weekly dashboard of sales forecasts and driver metrics. In addition to his finance and process-oriented activities, Joe developed and implemented several database-driven solutions for automated data storage, analysis, and reporting.
Before joining Hoover’s/D&B, Joe served as a Senior Business Analyst for Fidelity Investments, where he developed a national strategy with regional budgets and forecasts, as well as led the senior management team in redesigning a dynamic national staffing and resource model. He also led optimization efforts focused on warehousing operations, to yield $500,000 in annual savings. Prior to Fidelity, Joe designed and implemented a SQL-based activity-based costing system allowing BostonCoach to assess profitability and financial efficiency of customers, divisions, product lines, and sales people, and developed and managed a $4.5 million budget through monthly close.
Joe holds an M.B.A. with concentration in Finance and IT Management and Operations from the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. He is skilled in SQL-based languages, business-oriented data modeling, Adaptive Insights/NetSuite Planning, and is a Hyperion Certified Developer for Oracle/Hyperion Essbase.
Outside of work, Joe enjoys spending time with his family and taking advantage of living in Austin. On any given weekend, you can find him at the soccer fields watching or coaching one of his kids’ teams, or enjoying a meal with friends at a local eatery.
